An old Chinese proverb in The Georgia Asian Times says: From great misfortune can come even greater fortune.
My obsession, as one might call it, for Ming’s BBQ arose eight years ago when I had recently moved to Atlanta. I was told of a Chinese barbecue place, BBQ Corner 2, but when I arrived there was a closed sign on the window. Saddened by this misfortune, we walked up through the outdoor mall determined to satisfy our craving for duck. We entered another restaurant called Ming’s, home of the greater fortune previously mentioned.
The window was decorated with delectable decapitated duck (yes, we add awesome alliterations to our posts). Intestines, throat and stomach lining, quail, chicken, squid, fried pork and whole ducks were displayed through the glass. We entered and asked the waiter “what is the best deal for duck.” He left. We were unsure whether we would get food or if he was going to call a manager, but in less than two minutes he returned with three plates of roast duck over rice with green vegetables on the side. A mere $4.95 plus an occasional tax.
The quarter of a duck atop the rice was everything I was craving, and more. The moist meat with crispy skin was coated in the subtle duck sauce which seeped into the warm bed of rice. Green vegetables are added for either color or their nutritional value; they taste great regardless of their purpose. This meal is what the dudes of food consider the perfect serving, for you leave with a full stomach and an equally full wallet.
Recently, Ming’s has become popular among bloggers and a new branch of the restaurant opened in Duluth (which we will soon visit). This has been my favorite restaurant since I arrived in Atlanta, and the only way to satisfy our craving for a duckrun (in song d-u-c-k-r-u-n duckrun duckrun) is by going to Ming’s.
Last month, the dudes were at Ming’s eating duck when a large middle aged man with oddly circular glasses and a scruffy beard overheard us basking in our duck induced satisfaction. He recommended we ask for extra duck sauce on the side. Good call dude! The succulent sauce is delicious and it comes on the side (free of charge), so it can be poured over rice or dipped in by duck.
What to get
Roast duck over rice with green vegetables
Remember to ask for extra duck sauce for the rice!
