Hung on the Warung

Warung Makan
Calle Puebla No. 341, Roma Norte, 06700
Mon-Sat 11:00-19:00

Hidden behind a black metal door, DF’s best Indonesian dive is easy to miss. The storefront is identical to its Calle Puebla neighbors', and its sign, “Warung Makan: comida estila Indonesia,” looks like a spaghetti western film advertisement. If the aroma of boiling coconut milk hadn’t tiptoed onto the sidewalk, even foodies like us would probably have never walked in.

Entrance
Indonesia, which boasts the world’s largest Muslim population, is a melting pot of pribumi (native or indigenous Indonesian), Malay, Chinese, and many other ethnic groups. To complicate things, the country spent time under Dutch, Portuguese, French, British and Japanese colonial rule. This migratory and colonial mélange has made Indonesian cuisine equally diverse.

The country is made up of more than 10,000 islands. Some are famous for their curries, other for their fresh intestine stews. One is even known for its psychedelic mushroom, red bull, and pineapple shakes. Yet even a country with such culinary diversity claims certain national dishes that you’ll find at just about any warung, a ubiquitous family-owned neighborhood eatery.

We recently traveled to Indonesia and practically sustained ourselves on warungs for the two-month journey. Always simple, they remind us of middle school cafeterias where the food doesn’t suck (if those even exist). Some are housed in roadside shacks; others operate from rooms in family houses. Many don’t even have menus. Yet warungs always manage to dish out home cooked food at affordable prices.

Calle Puebla’s Warung Makan, however, is more in-line with a Mexican fonda.  Dishes come menú-style: with soup and rice, a chilango touch that helps the restaurant to compete with its neighboring eateries and attract hungry lunchtime customers expecting a stuff-yo-face meal.

Dudetip: If you ask politely, they will throw in extra rice, on the hou$e!

Mie Rebus

Nasi goreng (the country’s national dish, fried rice) and mie rebus (boiled noodles,) are a safe place to start your culinary voyage. Served with a fried egg and drizzled with Kecap (sweet soy sauce, pronounced ketchup), Indonesia’s daily fare is hearty and balanced.

Sate Ayam
However, If you are looking for a gluttonous adventure, jump straight into some Javanese specials like the gulai ayam, fried chicken simmered in a curry-coconut milk broth, or the sate ayam, moist and crispy chicken skewers tucked in a blanket of gingery peanut sauce. These dishes bring out Yogyakarta’s (the owner’s birth town) sweeter side and have a distinct island feel. Everything on the menu is seriously delish and prices, ranging from 70-100 Peña Nietos, wont break the bank!

Girl awkwardly eating alone
Although it may be hard to stop chowing once the food arrives, pick up your head and look around. The restaurant’s space is unassuming and deeply charming. Colorful tapestries ride the walls and tables, and the owner always greets customers with a warm smile, regulars with a hug and a kiss. It almost feels like your mom’s dining room. As a foreigner and momma’s boy living abroad, maybe that’s why I keep coming back.
