The Dudes of Food

Have you been searching for a little more food-inspired sass in your virtual life? Some cyber eye candy for the brain and gut? Well, the Dudes of Food, an ethnic dining blog that tackles identity and flavor on the cheap, has you covered. As Dudes of Food, proponents of the FSFW (full stomach full wallet), we explore the hard-to-find international restaurants and try to make sense of what’s on our plate.

Nepalese Dumplings Hit Mexico City

The Dudes of Food have a deep appreciation for dumplings and wouldn’t dare discriminate. We go hard on anything from dumpy baos to jade-chopstick gyozas. And while K-towns always make great mandoos, they’re nothing like a taste of home, southern chicken and dumplings.

We write Mexico City’s inaugural post with a mouthful of tamal oaxaqueño, thinking, could this chicken in sweet mole sauce wrapped in a blanket of steamed maize meal be a dumpling? What about that drunk taco that always hurts in the morning? Is there a line? An essential formula? Dumpling = protein wrapped in carb under sauce?

View from Baja California Street

To call our favorite dumpling joint in the DF a hole in the wall is all too literal.
Dharma Momo is run by one dude in a 2X2m window. He hand rolls momos, Nepalese dumplings, every Monday through Friday from 11 am to 7:30 pm.

Nepal is at the crossroads between China and India and so are its momos, filled with Chinese flavors and bathed in a piping hot masala broth. Dharma Momo serves them with lemon-pepper, Sriracha, and soy sauce. Each bite takes you to a different place, all in non-discriminatory dumpling heaven. In fact, I’m pretty sure the Dharma Momo chef rolls his dough with the same machine my Italian grandma uses to make her "famous" Sunday dumplings, which she calls ravioli.

Veggie Momos in Masala broth
Next time you find yourself wandering down the crowded Baja California Street, snag one of Dharma Momo’s 4 stools at the bar and enjoy the inner peace only a hand-made momo can bring. At 50 pesos a portion, it’s a real FSFW (full stomach full wallet).

Dude Tip: Our favorite flavor is vegetarian (¡gasps!). If you are feeling festive, wash it down with a yogurt lassi!

I wish there were more places like this, because it was simply too amazing for words. I came here with my boyfriend the other night, and it was absolutely fabulous. The use of wood throughout the venue Houston TX adds a very warm and inviting feel to venue.
